Joshua 4:19-24 (NCV) “The people crossed the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and camped at Gilgal, east of Jericho. They carried with them the twelve rocks taken from the Jordan, and Joshua set them up as an altar at Gilgal. Then he spoke to the Israelites: ‘In the future your children will ask you, “What do these rocks mean?” Tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry land. The Lord your God caused the water to stop flowing until you finished crossing it, just as the Lord did to the Red Sea. He stopped the water until we crossed it. The Lord did this so all people would know he has great power and so you would always respect the Lord your God.’”
Throughout the Old Testament whenever God revealed His presence and power to His people the response was to build an altar (usually made from a rock). The altar served two purposes. First, praise to God was offered from the altar, and second, it served as a reminder to people who would pass by, or to future generations, that God had done something great at that place.
Noah built an altar upon departing the ark. Moses’ altar was constructed at the place Aaron and Hur held Moses’ arms in the air to enable a great victory to be won. Abraham, Jacob, Joshua, and others built altars to celebrate what God had done for them.
Katy Community Fellowship will soon place a large rock as an altar on our own property where we will build our new facility! Nearly six years ago KCF began praying for a place to locate our church building. We asked the Lord to guide us to the right place and help us with the finances needed to purchase the land. The place we felt God was leading us to was located close to the Katy Mills AMC Theater, meaning the cost would be huge. But God wanted to show us just how great He is. Seven acres were donated to us. To God be the glory!
The desire for our KCF rock altar will be as people now and in the future pass by and ask, “What does this mean?”, we can relate the story of God’s miraculous provision!
Take a moment with your family and make an altar (with a bench or chair) and praise Him for how great He is.
